Always on show
From my earliest childhood memories, I recall having a deep passion for drama and acting. Forever changing my voice, at the age of 9, I began doing Hand Puppetry which led to 100’s of performances for birthday parties and Christmas trees for many years to come.
By the age of 12, I had developed the ability to impersonate an ever-growing number of famous people. In the last three years of my schooling, I achieved the award for Best actor in both English and Afrikaans drama, for which I received Colours. In 1979, in my final year, I entered a SATA, (South African Talent Association) competition, held for schools countrywide. In the finals, held at UNISA in Pretoria, I came second.
By the time I was 20, the number of people I could impersonate had grown to 26, initially including (from S.A.), Charles Fortune, Chris Barnard, Gerrie Coetzee, John Voster, Tony Factor and Television presenters – Jan Spies, Michael de Morgan and Colin du Plessis.
International personalities included Prince Charles of Wales, Orson Welles, Elvis Presley, Mohammed Ali and Louis Armstrong.
Having a never ending desire to add to my repertoire, Nelson Mandela and F.W. De Klerk became latter additions.
An ongoing passion for vocal chord rearrangement
During the South African Bush War and my military stint, I entertained fellow troops on the border at Ondangwa Military Base and distributed many tape cassette copies of my work to troops and friends. The Commanding Officer invited me to entertain his guests one night! I’ve never looked back since, nor lost my passion for all things voice-related.
Becoming a Tribute Artist
For many years now I have performed as a Tribute Artist at many a venue. My repertoire here too, has grown dramatically over time. Variety being my middle name, some artists that I pay tribute to include Nat King Cole, Elvis Presley, Dire Straits, Billy Idol, Neil Diamond, The Righteous Brothers, Jethro Tull and ZZ Top! The Voice-over Bug
In more recent years I have taken to doing voice-overs for Audio Books, Documentary Narrations, Radio Commercials and now cover the entire spectrum of voice-over categories. I thoroughly enjoy writing in all it’s forms, particularly cartoon type stories for children and doing all the character voices in an Audio book of the same. I’m crazy about what I do and always give it my all! In fact I work so hard at getting accents and scripts in my head that my wife often states that she’s not sure who she’s living with most of the time!
